What is whole life insurance?
Whole life insurance is permanent coverage. As long as premiums are paid, the policy is designed to stay in force for your entire life and pay a death benefit to your beneficiaries whenever you pass away. Traditional whole life typically includes three guarantees: a level premium, a guaranteed death benefit, and cash value that grows at a guaranteed rate.
Some whole life policies are "participating," which means they may pay dividends. Dividends aren't guaranteed, but when they're paid, you can usually take them in cash, use them to reduce premiums, or use them to buy additional coverage.
Who it's a good fit for
- People who want coverage that will be there no matter when they pass away
- Parents and grandparents who want to leave a legacy or inheritance
- Anyone who wants permanent coverage for final expenses or estate costs
- People who value guarantees and like a built-in savings element
- Business owners planning for buy-sell agreements or key-person needs
How the cash value works
Part of each premium goes toward the policy's cash value, which grows on a tax-deferred basis. Over time, you may be able to borrow against it or withdraw from it. Policy loans accrue interest, unpaid loans and withdrawals reduce the death benefit, and surrendering a policy can have tax consequences. Cash value usually builds slowly in the early years, so whole life works best as a long-term commitment.
Whole life vs. term life
Term life costs less for the same death benefit but ends after a set number of years. Whole life costs more but is designed to last for life and builds cash value. Many families use both: term for big, temporary needs like a mortgage and young children, and a smaller whole life policy for permanent needs. Final expense insurance is a smaller form of whole life aimed at funeral and end-of-life costs.

Whole life insurance is subject to underwriting and eligibility requirements. Guarantees are based on the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. Dividends are not guaranteed. Policy loans and withdrawals reduce cash value and the death benefit. Features and availability vary by insurer and state. This is general information, not tax advice.
