How this estimate works
The estimator simply adds up the costs you'd want your coverage to handle, then rounds up to the next $500 so you have a simple number to talk through. It doesn't calculate premiums, and it doesn't decide whether you qualify. Those depend on your age, health, the amount of coverage, and the insurance company.
Where the starting amounts come from
When you pick burial or cremation, the estimator fills in a national median as a starting point. According to the National Funeral Directors Association's 2023 General Price List Study, the national median cost of an adult funeral with viewing and burial was $8,300, and $6,280 for a funeral with viewing and cremation. Those medians don't include cemetery costs, a monument or marker, or cash-advance items like flowers or an obituary, and the burial figure doesn't include a vault. That's why the estimator gives you separate boxes for cemetery costs and other expenses. Costs vary by funeral home, so your local prices may be higher or lower.
Get real local prices
Under the Federal Trade Commission's Funeral Rule, a funeral home must give you a written, itemized General Price List when you ask about arrangements in person, and you generally have the right to choose only the goods and services you want. Asking a local funeral home or two for their price list is the best way to fine-tune your estimate.
What health has to do with it
Your health doesn't change how much coverage you may want, but it can affect the type of plan you qualify for: a level benefit that's available right away, a graded benefit with limited payouts in the first few years, or a guaranteed issue plan with no health questions and a waiting period. Matt compares several insurance companies because each one views health differently.
